Caring for Family Treasures Workshop Schedule

The ‘Caring for Family Treasures’ exhibit will be on display at Western’s Learning Resource Center from June 10 through June 27. from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.  The exhibit is free and open to the public to learn how to care for their family heirlooms.

Designed by collections care professionals from the Oklahoma Cultural Heritage Trust,  the exhibit consists of 12 panels with best practices on how to care for items including textiles, recordings such as cassettes and family videos, jewelry, clocks and watches, photographs, paintings and paper items such as letters, certificates and maps. Natural materials such as fur, feathers, wood, and leather, as well as decorative metals such as silver, brass and copper are covered. The exhibit offers helpful hints on the proper display, storage and handling of items, as well as expert advice on things not to do.

“This special exhibit is helpful for the public to better understand how to care for their irreplaceable heirlooms,” said Suzanne Rooker, Westen’s LRC Director. “Almost everyone has special items passed down through generations and it is important to learn how to best care for them in order to preserve family history and memories for generations to come.”

A full schedule of workshops related to the care of family heirlooms will be offered during the exhibits display.  The workshops are also free and open to the public.  The following are offerings are scheduled June 10 – 24.
